Innovative gas spring solution, which seemed impossible, wins national tender

A customer, active in the production of double-layer bicycle parking systems, came to us with a seemingly impossible task. Their goal: to develop a revolutionary gas spring that would meet extreme specifications and give them an edge in a national tender.

Customer problem statement

Our client manufactures advanced double-layer bicycle parking systems for which specific steel gas springs are essential. For an important tender, extremely high demands were placed on the system. The gas spring had to be capable of damping in both directions, with particularly high damping forces on downward movements, without having to modify the existing system. The customer had previously approached other major manufacturers, but none of them saw any possibilities to meet these requirements within one gas spring.

Approach from Brimotech

Given our previous successful collaboration, Brimotech was approached again for this challenging project. Our team visited the customer to thoroughly analyze the existing system and identify the specific requirements for the gas spring. Back at the office, we started sketching and brainstorming, but it turned out to be a difficult puzzle. However, this challenge did not let us go. During an evening watching Champions League, suddenly came the breakthrough: an innovative sketch that could theoretically meet all the requirements.

With this sketch in hand, we immediately contacted one of our engineers in Italy. His enthusiastic response confirmed that we were on the right track. We quickly produced some physical prototypes to test the operation, and these proved successful. Within a few weeks we were able to present the customer with a working concept.

Results

The first tests at the customer’s premises were very promising; the steel gas spring met all strict requirements and proved to perform even better than expected. The customer ordered several new samples for the tender and, thanks to our unique gas spring, they won the multi-year contract. We agreed that only our gas springs would be used in production, and immediately submitted the concept to the European Patent Office to protect our innovation.
