Therefore, you should make a calculation before purchasing gas springs

If you are going to install our gas springs yourself, make sure you have the correct installation position with the cylinder pointing upward. The trickiest application is when the gas spring hinges through the horizon, as shown below. If you have a similar application, we recommend dynamic damping.

Calculation gas springs

In order to select the right gas spring for your application, a small calculation will need to be performed.

The basis for all gas spring calculations lies in the moment theorem (Fg x Sg = Fk x Sk). This is a relatively simple calculation, however, the application has a continuously changing center of gravity due to the angular displacement in addition to which also the gas spring makes a certain amount of travel and a certain progressivity will occur. All this makes the calculation of gas springs a serious job.

In order to simplify the calculation we have developed special software which makes the calculation of gas springs relatively easy and allows us to directly generate an installation diagram.

Here you can find the basics to make a simple calculation:

  • F1 = {[(M x D) : L] : n } + (10% ~ 15%)
  • M= Weight of the valve in [N].
  • B= Center of gravity of the valve
  • C= Attachment point to the valve
  • S= Attachment point to the frame
  • D= Horizontal distance from center of gravity to pivot point
  • L= Distance of gas spring vector to pivot point
  • n= Number of gas springs
  • 1kg = 9,81N
