Customer problem statement

Our client, a leading builder of superyachts, was looking for a way to make a horizontal refrigerator door open and close smoothly and in a controlled manner. The stainless steel 316 gas spring not only had to ensure easy opening and stable open position even in rough weather, but also a firm closure to keep the refrigerator functioning optimally. However, the problem was that gravity and the gas spring caused the flap to close with a loud bang, necessitating a soft-close mechanism.

Approach from Brimotech

Our team got to work with 3D software to sketch out different designs. We soon came to the conclusion that a separate oil damper could be the solution. This damper would control the closing of the valve, manufactured entirely from high-quality stainless steel 316 to meet yacht building requirements.

Although the initial proposals worked, we wanted to create a true softclose where only the last part of the closing was damped. After several iterations, we developed a separate damper that could be completely built into the wall of the fridge. This system combines the gas spring and damper to ensure both a powerful closure and a smooth, noiseless closure.

Results

After successful customer trials, the superyacht builder decided to adopt this soft-close concept in all their products. Moreover, we became their exclusive supplier for all gas spring and damper issues. Since then, this customer has grown into one of the largest and best-known superyacht builders in the Netherlands, and perhaps even in Europe.
